A newly disclosed pair of critical PHP vulnerabilities known collectively as PHP2Shell has put website security back in the spotlight. With potential impacts to websites and applications running vulnerable versions of PHP, the disclosure is an important reminder for hotel owners and operators: The platform powering your hotel website matters.
why PHP2Shell matters
PHP powers a significant portion of the web and is the underlying programming language for platforms such as WordPress. What makes PHP2Shell particularly noteworthy is that the vulnerability exists at the PHP runtime level—not within WordPress itself.
That means a website could potentially be exposed even when its CMS, plugins and themes are fully updated if the underlying PHP environment remains vulnerable.
a different approach at Vizergy
Vizergy hotel websites are built on a controlled Microsoft ASP.NET technology stack rather than PHP. As a result, vulnerabilities specifically targeting the PHP runtime, such as PHP2Shell, do not apply to Vizergy's ASP.NET platform.
Vizergy's approach also reduces reliance on the large ecosystem of third-party plugins and community-developed components commonly associated with open-source website platforms.
Instead, Vizergy operates a purpose-built hospitality platform within a controlled environment, allowing our technology team to centrally manage the platform and its supported components.
controlled doesn't mean invulnerable
No responsible technology provider should claim that any platform is immune to security vulnerabilities. Microsoft technologies require security updates, servers require maintenance and third-party integrations must be monitored.
The advantage of a controlled platform isn't that vulnerabilities become impossible. It's greater control over the technology environment and the components that need to be secured.
what hotels should be asking
Hotel website security should go beyond asking whether a particular CMS is secure. Owners and operators should also understand what technology powers their website, who maintains the underlying environment, how heavily the platform relies on third-party components and how quickly critical security updates can be deployed.
Hotel websites connect travelers with booking engines, analytics platforms, CRM systems, marketing technologies and other services. That makes the website an important piece of the property's digital infrastructure.
PHP2Shell will eventually disappear from the headlines, but the larger lesson won't:
What travelers see on the front end of a hotel website is only part of the story. What's underneath it matters too.
