Google’s New Algorithm Update – BERT

November 05, 2019
Google
Google has recently announced what they consider a major algorithm update, what many are calling their most important in the last 5 years. It is being called the BERT update (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) and is a fancy technical way of saying that the search engine has just made huge strides in determining what a search query means contextually.

The BERT update will allow Google to process words in a search query in relation to the other words, not just taking the words themselves at face value. It’s a big step in the direction of machines learning context in language and the intent behind search queries. Google has said that this update will help Google better understand the context of a search in 10% of the queries, and users should see a difference in the results of those searches.

What does this mean for us?

At Vizergy, we have seen our share of Google updates, and most of them have had positive impacts on our clients’ websites. This will be no different. While we will be keeping a close eye on search results and natural traffic over the next few weeks, we don’t anticipate any negative impacts. This update is a positive step forward in search, and we believe that websites with comprehensive conversational content written for the user will be rewarded.

Know that we are staying diligent in our monitoring of your site’s performance. You can read Google’s official blog post about BERT and see examples of this update in practice here.

As always, feel free reach out to your Account Manager or contact us if you have any concerns or questions about the update.
